Report: Ian Maatsen unlikely to return to Chelsea after loan from Coventry City amid Lucas Digne interest

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen is unlikely to be recalled by the club in January despite the exclusion of Ben Chilwell until the end of the season.

The England defender was forced out against Juventus in the Champions League and although it looks positive for the Blues, he now needs surgery which will see him ruled out until the end of the season.

Chelsea are unlikely to recall Maatsen of his Coventry City loan despite Chilwell’s absence, according to the Athletic.

Additionally, Emerson Palmieri could be recalled but there is a clause in his loan deal at Lyon that allows the French side to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season.

Therefore, Chelsea would prefer to swell their ranks and have been heavily linked with the transfer of Lucas Digne from Everton, an ideal replacement for Chilwell.

It has been reported that Chelsea will make a decision on either Emerson or Maatsen recall by December 30 and it looks like they will choose not to bring the Dutch teenager back to Stamford Bridge.

Maatsen has only had two stints away from the club, the first with Charlton Athletic in League One last season before joining Coventry City in the league for the current campaign.

Maatsen has made 21 appearances for the Robins so far this season and Chelsea are unwilling to disrupt his progress by recalling him to play a role as Marcos Alonso’s replacement during Chilwell’s absence.
